Open the windows on mild days. I agree fresh air is the best. Also change furnance filter once a month and change vacuum cleaner bag when 3/4 full. Every two years have duct work professionaly cleaned.

I keep ceiling fans running pretty much year round to help circulate the air in our home. I also use a product called OUST to help with the trapped in odors. The biggest thing is letting the house breathe. Summer or winter, unless it is below freezing or like an inferno outside, I try to open windows at each end of the house while I'm getting ready for work, and again while preparing dinner to let fresh air in. Even during the winter months, you'd be amazed at how it affects your sinuses!

The biggest problem with older houses is that their air sealing is even worse than their insufficient insualtion. They often have many cracks and crevices that let in air drafts like crazy.

Your most cost effective step is to air seal first. Buy a cheap smoke pencil and test all the doors windows, outlets, baseboards, ceiling lights, and any penetration to the outside. Do your best to caulk, foam, gasket, plastic coat, rope caulk anything that shows a leak with the smoke pencil. Air sealing will get you your biggest bang for your buck by stopping the air exchange that blows your heat away.

The insulation is the next step and to do it right you may need help. the starting point is always the attic or roof. that is where the heat you pay for tends to want to escape first, so that is where you should start your efforts.

Contact your local community action office or contact your energy assistance office and ask for a reference to your county weatherization. they have teams that help people insulate for free if you income is low enough for the program. It doesnt even matter if you rent or own, they will help insulate your place.

Go buy some new air filters for your home. If it's not too cold outside, open or crack a window for fresh air. A fan will also keep the air from smelling stale. And after all that, a touch of febreeze will make everything smell fresh :)

Add a ceiling fan that runs in reverse, because the warmest air is at the top of the room. .Nail blankets to the walls. You can decrease the amount of cold air in the room by filling the room with as much as possible, even empty boxes.

Be thankful you live in a house, some people don't.

Call your local gas and electric company, there are many things that can help you with. They can help you for your needs. If you will work with them, they will show you all of your options.

Circulating the air is the only way. I usually open the sliding glass door and turn on the ceiling fan for about 10 minutes on a sunny afternoon.
